Our History
Tabernacle
Missionary Baptist Church was organized January 25, 1973 by Rev.
Donald Gene Burgs, Sr. Together with an assembly of believers, the
initial meeting was held at the Walls Chapel AME Church in Houston,
Texas. Proclaiming the Gospel, developing mature Christians, and
seeking the lost are just a few of the churches priorities. The
initiative to serve the needs of the community and developing the
youth were set in motion. As services were held in places such as
the Hope Lutheran Gymnasium, and the Independent District Association
Office Building, the vision and priorities of the church flourished.
With
the vision of the pastor inspired by God, a “can do”
attitude and faithfulness to God, Pastor Burgs located the present
building at 6801 Westover Street. The members joined him in claiming
this building as the permanent home of the Tabernacle Missionary
Baptist church. Through faith, prayer and determination God blessed
the members of Tabernacle with a building to call home.
Justifiably,
as pastor Burgs preaches, teaches and explains the Word of God to
this flock, the Lord has multiplied servants to his fold. As a result
of growth and as a method of continuous growth, many ministries
were instituted and continue to work untiringly today.
The
years 1979 to 1983 were marked as a severe period for the Pastor
and congregation. Many members dispersed during those days of persecution.
However, a faithful few weathered the storm and, THE END WAS NOT
YET. Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant
in prayer.
The
Lord has carried Tabernacle through storms, over mountains and through
valleys. He has given the church a pastor after His own heart, one
who keeps a direct line of communication with the Lord, and is not
afraid to stand in the face of opposition. Many souls have been
saved and the membership is increasing with faithful and dedicated
individuals who are desirous to experience a relationship with the
True and Living God. We have been joyously laboring on this corner
for the past 34 years. Tabernacle is thankful to God for enabling
them to accept trial and tribulations as a challenge from God to
claim a larger blessing.
Tabernacle
Baptist church is a “Center for Caring”, caring for
persons who are unique and precious.(which includes all mankind),
and remembering that we are all recipients of God’s Love.
Today our joy is so refreshing, reviving and revitalizing. This
is the kind of joy that quenches the thirst of every pastor called
by God. It comes from seeing the congregants react to the “VISION”
the Lord has carved in his heart. In September of 1991, God in His
infinite wisdom used His faithful servant in the person of Pastor
Burgs to organize a “Meal MINISTRY” within the church.
Meals were accompanied with a helping hand to all who are in need
of physical, mental or spiritual comfort and encouragement. This
ministry impacted the community in such a way that on its second
anniversary, the Meal Ministry was spotlighted on Houston’s
Channel 11 evening news. In January of 1992, Pastor Burgs began
a Nursing Home Ministry and has since made a continued effort to
reaching out to the church and to the community through a host of
effective ministries.
Because of the pressures of the past years, we have developed a sense of pride that is mandatory for us to win, and we must win! As God’s children, we have become more obedient as his Bride, more faithful, and as his servants more dutiful. As we embark upon our 35th year, we recognize that God’s children know not what the future holds, bet we know the one who holds the future. Our faith will continue to remain unwavering, because faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible. As Christians, we are challenged to portray and exemplify a war-like spirit, as spirit that says “We Shall NOT BE MOVED.” This is the courageous confidence that has brought us to this moment in history. In February 1994, the Radio Ministry was instituted by Pastor Burgs. This ministry allowed radio listeners to tap into weekly Sunday Services on KWWJ 1360.
